Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) shares its origins with Judo and is a form of combat specializing in grappling, using leverage, body mechanics and technique to control and submit your opponent.

BJJ is a form of combat made famous in the early 1990's when the Gracie family (founders of BJJ) defeated fighters twice their size in very limited-rule bouts in the infant days of the UFC. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms suddenly started springing up all over the world with participants wishing to learn this seemingly indestructible Martial Art.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu today is a truly modern Martial Art with most clubs having the option of training in either Gi (a form of Judo uniform) or non- Gi classes. Non- Gi classes are more directed at Mixed Martial Arts training, eliminating a lot of the moves and submissions a skilled Jiu Jitsu practitioner has at their disposal with the aid of their Gi. Training non- Gi (normally done in a Rashie) also makes controlling your opponent that much harder so certain movements and holds have to be adapted to cope with the lack of traction and grip a Gi provides.
